Above is a sketch of a "proposed" layout.  We are open to (and even eager for) suggestions if it appears to a "pro" that there isn't sufficient room for this layout or if we've created some  logistical issues.  I am not quite sure how the present island relates to the one I'm proposing here.  I know we should probably keep the basic footprint similar, so as to minimize patching in the floor tiles (I do realize that may be an issue in the "knee hole") So, I'm kind of suggesting this but still willing to consider options...depending on feedback.

Our thinking on overall "look" would be two have the wall cabinets (upper and lower) finished in a white or off white or light colored 'distressed' kind of finish, with the island contrasting and either being a dark wood inish or a dark painted finish (also probably 'distressed').  We like the look of "table legs" at the four corners of the island, to suggest a "work table" look.

We are considering glass fronts for the uppers.  But still debating that one a bit.  I also think we might just loose the uppers on the sink wall just in an attempt to make the space a bit more open.  Just a thought.

Counter treatment for counters and island would most likely be granite (unless someone's got a better thought) with some kind of tile backsplash.  Jackie is intrigued with some "decorative" treatment (perhaps in terra cotta) over the cooktop.

When you click the "page 3" tab at the top right hand side, you will see some "ideas" and I will attempt to explain what we liked about each.
