The pictures below are a "look" that Jackie likes. She would like some kind of decorative treatment over the stove top, such as the terra cotta one that is pictured. I also prefer some kind of tile backsplash with the granite, as opposed to using vertical slab granite. (although 'ease of cleaning' might rule out the terra cotta)
The picture below represents an idea for a ceiling treatment. As the ceiling exists at present, there is a recessed area (painted midnight blue). We thought we might use some kind of moulding that would be consistent with the cabinetry and kind of make the whole thing look a little more custom (and old world).

One additional idea that we have been considering is turning the existing laundry area into a desk area with cabinetry that would match the other wall cabinets. If we were able to do this, we would need to fit a stackable washer and dryer into the current "pantry" closet. Pictures below will show you the area at present, to refresh your recall. They aren't the best pics, but at least you get the idea (you could also revisit my overall floorplan on the first page of this). The plumbing for the washer is in the wall between the pantry closet, so that part seems doable, if the stackable units would fit and the dryer could be vented. If you have any thoughts as to the feasibility of this idea, let me know and we can either abandon the thought all together, or put a little additional thought into what we'd hope to have in a desk area.
